The Hereford Mappa Mundi is a Medieval map of the world that places Jerusalem at its centre. To the medieval mind this would have been completely appropriate and consistent as it places the events of Christ’s life, death and resurrection at the centre of the world.  In 2017 I embarked on a journey to the Holy Land to learn more about the places of significance to my faith.

I volunteered in a convent-guest house in the Old City of Jerusalem. My duties included serving meals in the dining room, making beds, sweeping the terraces, working at the reception desk, gardening and helping the guests. This was in exchange of bed and board. I had the opportunity to work along side local people and meet people from all over the world.

This expereince helped me grow in my faith and now I have a deeper connection to the places of importance in the Biblical story. It also infused in me a love for the vibrancy and colour of the Holy Land and an apprieciation for the artistic skill that artists have used throughout the centuries to express their faith and love of God.
