I used Celtic and Pictish patterns found in the Book of Kells and Lindisfarne Gospels.

The Celtic heart knot represents the heart of the home.

The key patterns (around the middle) represent creativity, fruitfulness and life.

The step patterns (in the four corners) represent correct orientation, focus and place.

The knot pattern with crosses (around the border) represents safety and protection.

I drew the geometry and pattern grids by hand before painting it in egg tempera and shell gold on cotton paper.
